Movies That Will Mess With Your Head

Have you ever watched a film and been completely blown away? It’s happened to me plenty of times, and there’s nothing like it.

Some movies mess with your head in ways that can be hard to shake — even days after seeing them. So whether you’re looking for something to watch this weekend or just want to see what all the fuss is about, here are some of my favorite films that will mess with your head:

Black Swan (2010)

This kind of movie messes with your head because it’s so different from what you expect. It takes a psychological thriller and flips it on its head, delivering a story about ballet dancers, who are not just professional performers but also very private people. The film starts with one dancer, Nina (Natalie Portman), struggling to overcome her demons after the death of her husband. She’s having trouble finding work as an artist, and then she meets Mila Kunis’ character, who offers her a chance at redemption through dancing again. Nina must decide if she can take on this challenge — or will she be pushed too far?

Se7en (1995)

David Fincher’s modern classic is a psychological thriller that follows two detectives trying to solve the murder of nine people by following a single clue: the number “9.” Kevin Spacey plays John Doe, while Brad Pitt plays Clarence Oddfellow. The two detectives are convinced there was a ninth victim when they discover a letter addressed to “The 9th Man,” which leads them on a race against time to find out who wrote it and why. They soon realize that something bigger than themselves is involved in their investigation…

Fractured (2019)

This film is a psychological thriller with an intriguing plot and compelling characters. The film follows a woman named Claire (played by Robin Weigert) who has lost her memory after being in a car accident. She wakes up in a hospital with no recollection of how she got there or who she is — but she does know one thing: she wants revenge on someone who hurt her family.

Interstellar (2014)

In this sci-fi film, Matthew McConaughey plays an astronaut who has been off-world for five years and returns home to find his family missing. He then embarks on a journey through space and time to find them before it’s too late.

The Prestige (2006)

Christopher Nolan’s psychological thriller follows two magicians who compete against each other using their abilities for entertainment; however, things start getting out of hand when one of them believes he can do more than just entertain others with his magic tricks… but is he capable of it? This movie is one of Christopher Nolan’s best works because it focuses on themes like power dynamics, deception, and obsession.

Deja Vu (2006)

What is real? Is it what you see and feel, or is it your memories of it? In this film, we watch as a man who aliens have abducted begins to suspect that he may not actually be an abductee at all. The film explores the relationship between memory, perception, and identity and asks what makes something real — and whether or not we can trust our own minds.

Fight Club (1999)

In Fight Club, a young man named Edward Norton plays a soap salesman who decides to take his life back from consumer culture by starting a fight club. He recruits other men to join him in violent acts against each other to prove that they’re free of their consumerist shackles. The film questions how much control we have over our actions and whether or not we should even try to participate in society.

Triangle (2009)

In Triangle, Jennifer Connelly plays a woman who has been institutionalized for multiple personality disorder since childhood. She believes that she has been kidnapped by aliens and forced into servitude by humans with whom they share some kind of connection — but what if she’s wrong? This film explores how far people will go when they believe they are under

Donnie Darko (2001)

This is the movie for you if you’ve ever had a nightmare that seemed to go on forever. It’s a dreamlike journey into the mind of a troubled teen with visions of an alternate dimension. He learns that his life is in danger and must try to warn his parents before it’s too late.

Inception (2010)

This film will mess with your head if you don’t keep up with it. You have to pay attention, or else you’ll miss something crucial. The story follows a group of corporate thieves who enter the dreams of their targets, stealing secrets from their subconscious minds. They use these stolen secrets as leverage against the targets’ companies to make money for themselves.

Gone Girl (2014)

This psychological thriller follows the rise and fall of Nick Dunne, played by Ben Affleck, and his wife Amy, played by Rosamund Pike — a pair of young marrieds whose lives are turned upside down when she disappears under mysterious circumstances while they’re on vacation together in Greece.

Split (2016)

In the film Split, M. Night Shyamalan’s first foray into the horror genre, James McAvoy plays a man with 23 personalities who kidnaps three girls and holds them hostage in his home. The film is told from the perspective of one of the kidnappers, who possesses only one personality. The film itself is a bit of a mess — it has multiple timelines and jumps between characters — but it’s an interesting way to explore an unusual premise.

The Truman Show (1998)

This 1998 drama from director Peter Weir follows Jim Carrey as Truman Burbank, who was raised from birth on television as a publicity stunt for his father’s product. As he grows up and becomes aware of his fake life, he takes action against those responsible for making him into a propaganda machine. He escapes from his fake world by jumping off a cliff and onto an island, where he meets Christof (Andrew Garfield), who has been hiding there since escaping from his show years ago.

Shutter Island (2010)

Shutter Island is a psychological thriller that stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo as U.S. marshals investigating the disappearance of a patient from an asylum on a remote island off the coast of Boston. The patients at this facility were subject to various experiments for supposed illnesses, but what if they weren’t ill? What if they just wanted to escape from their lives? The film delves into the mind of one man who has been through so much in his life — he’s willing to go through anything for freedom. This film will mess with your head!

Wrapping Up!

It’s the movies that make us question what we take for granted. Whether in our own lives or in the world around us, these films can mess with our heads. Most of them are thrillers, but a few outliers also get under your skin for different reasons. In any case, we highly recommend you watch all of these films at some point!
